History

Our story

Statera Energy was founded in 2015 with a vision to become a market leader in grid balancing technologies, filling critical gaps in the UK’s energy system to help fast‑track the era of renewables.

We have rapidly progressed development of flexible generation, battery storage, pumped hydro and hydrogen assets – positioning Statera at the forefront of the grid‑balancing infrastructure needed for a renewables‑led future.

Tom Vernon

CEO, Board Director & Founder

Tom is Chief Executive Officer and founder at Statera Energy and has 17 years of investment and development experience in the power sector. He is responsible for delivering 2.2GW of flexible energy and storage capacity in the UK. Prior to founding Statera Energy, Tom was a Partner at Hazel Capital LLP, where he oversaw the delivery of 300MWs of renewable projects, after being an analyst on its public equity funds. Tom holds a 1st Class MEng in Civil Engineering with Construction Management from the University of Edinburgh.

Andrew Troup

Chief Development Officer & Co-Founder

Andrew is Statera’s CDO and co-founder. He has been involved in the planning, environment and energy sector as a Chartered Surveyor for 37 years. He was a board Director at RPS Group PLC between 1991 and 2009. From 2010 Andrew co-developed over 200MW of solar schemes between 2010 and 2016. He was Development Director at Estover Energy between 2009 and 2020, a company that successfully developed, financed and built 3 biomass plants in the UK totalling 80MW in capacity. Andrew has led on the development of 2GW of consented projects at Statera.

Ben Wright

Chief Financial Officer

Ben is Chief Financial Officer at Statera. He has twenty years of experience in the energy industry including Centrica and BG Group; formerly CFO at Bioenergy Group and Diamond Generating Europe. He played a key role in raising bank debt and managing over €5bn of successful capex projects (Dutch offshore wind, Europe and Middle East solar, and thermal plants).

EQT acquired Statera Energy in 2024 and is helping the company accelerate its deployment of flexible generation across the UK.

Statera Energy Operations

Statera Energy Operations is a market-leading operations and maintenance provider for flexible generation and battery energy storage assets in the UK, with over 950MW of assets under contract across Statera Energy and other client portfolios. SEO safeguards the performance of all Statera's assets throughout their lifecycle.

Statkraft

Statera Energy and Statkraft entered a 15-year strategic partnership to deliver 1GW of flexible energy assets, including battery storage and high-efficiency gas generation – integrated into Statkraft’s virtual power plant, with Statkraft providing market optimisation and trading services; this collaboration underlines Statera’s commitment to supporting the UK’s transition to a secure, low-carbon energy system. Statkraft is the UK’s leading renewables trader, with 6GW of third-party renewable and flex generation under contract. Statkraft has facilitated over 4.3GW of new-build renewable energy generation through more than 240 long-term Power Purchase Agreements.
