Our history

Our Story: Powering the Future of Energy

Statera Energy was founded with the ambition of supporting the UK's transition to a predominately renewables-based energy system, while minimising costs and maintaining system security.

Pioneers

A first mover within short duration battery technology

Our first battery energy storage system (BESS) became operational in 2017, just two years after the company was founded, and was the largest battery project in the country at the time. By 2023, we had delivered 450MW of BESS capacity, including the largest connected to the UK distribution system at 100MW, building the foundations of a market-leading portfolio.

Today, Statera has 1.5GW of BESS capacity delivered or in construction, with a further 4.1GW in development or consented.

  • Thurrock Storage: At 300MW this site was the UK’s largest when energised in August 2025

  • Carrington Storage: Construction is underway with 680MW of capacity – one of the largest consented BESS projects in the UK – further cementing our leadership position.

Having built a strong foundation in BESS and flexible gas generation to deliver fast, short-duration grid support, Statera recognised the need for longer-duration solutions to meet the demands of a renewables-led power system.

A growing portfolio

Expanding Horizons: Hydrogen and Pumped Storage Hydro

This insight has driven our expansion into pumped storage hydro (PSH) and hydrogen – scalable, cost-effective solutions that store energy for days or weeks, complementing the rapid-response capabilities of BESS and flexible generation.

As critical components of the future energy system, hydrogen and PSH place Statera at the forefront of the shift to a low-carbon grid.

  • Kintore Hydrogen: The first of its kind in Scotland and the UK, will catalyse large-scale hydrogen production, supporting decarbonisation and high-skilled employment.

  • Loch Kemp PSH: Delivering 600MW of low-carbon capacity, boosting UK PSH capacity by over 20% and providing instantaneous clean electricity for around one million homes.

A clear vision

Statera continues to grow rapidly

We now have 2.2GW delivered and under construction, with a clear pathway to 7GW by 2030. Our end-to-end business model - developing, building, owning, and operating our assets - enables us to capture value across the entire lifecycle and deliver premium returns.

Our portfolio aligns directly with UK government priorities for decarbonisation, security of supply, and flexibility, positioning us as a key player in achieving national energy goals.

16GW Total pipeline

With a proven track record, a scalable model, and a relentless drive to innovate, Statera is building the flexible energy infrastructure that will power the UK’s renewable future.
